Every year, we present our list of 10 Breakthrough Technologies, showcasing innovations poised to significantly influence our daily lives and work environments. This year, however, we faced a unique challenge. While our final selections span various sectors including energy, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence, the 2026 iteration proved particularly difficult to finalize. The primary reason? We had an overwhelming number of noteworthy AI candidates that could not all be included. Among those making the cut were AI companions, mechanistic interpretability, generative coding, and hyperscale data centers, leaving many promising ideas behind to maintain a diverse selection.
Inspired by this abundance, we considered producing a dedicated list centered solely around AI. This idea sparked our enthusiasm, leading to the creation of our inaugural feature: 10 Things That Matter in AI Right Now. This new annual collection will be revealed for the first time at our flagship AI conference, EmTech AI, hosted at MIT’s campus on April 21, 2026. For those interested, tickets are still available, and the list will also be published online later that day.
The methodology for curating this AI-focused list mirrored our traditional process for the Breakthrough Technologies. Our dedicated team of AI reporters and editors proposed a variety of ideas, which were compiled into a comprehensive document. Through lively discussions and votes, we narrowed down the extensive list to a final selection of ten. However, unlike our previous lists, this one aims to encompass not only groundbreaking AI technologies but also pivotal trends and research directions that are currently shaping the AI landscape. This approach allows us to provide a more holistic view of what’s significant in AI today.
Consider this list a glimpse into the insights of our expert AI reporting team: it reflects the topics and developments we will closely monitor throughout the year, influencing the news and feature articles we deliver in 2026. 10 Things That Matter in AI Right Now represents our perspective on the evolving AI ecosystem, serving as a catalyst for discussion and possibly even debate. We are eager to share these findings with our audience on April 21. If you want to be among the first to discover these insights, we encourage you to attend EmTech AI or subscribe to our livestream announcement.
