In the latest edition of The Download, we unveil our prestigious Innovators Under 35 list for 2026, shining a light on the brightest young minds transforming the landscape of science and technology. Each year, we celebrate 35 exceptional individuals from across the globe who are pioneering innovative solutions to complex challenges, thereby providing a glimpse into the future of scientific advancement.
This year, a rigorous selection process narrowed down over 550 nominations to identify these trailblazers. Supported by 44 expert judges, our panel evaluated candidates based on their contributions in four critical sectors: biotechnology, artificial intelligence, computing and robotics, and climate and energy. Each honoree has already made significant strides toward their respective goals, showcasing a commitment to creating impactful technological advancements.
Among the groundbreaking innovations highlighted is a fascinating study that explores the potential of spiderwebs as a tool for environmental conservation. Traditionally, monitoring biodiversity has been a daunting and resource-intensive task. However, researchers have discovered that spiderwebs can act as a rich source of environmental DNA (eDNA), capturing genetic material from both their spider creators and the various organisms they interact with. This method proves to be far superior in identifying vertebrates compared to conventional tools, paving the way for more efficient ecological assessments.
