Young Innovators Revolutionizing Biotech Today

Each year, MIT Technology Review highlights some of the most promising young talents in the fields of science and technology through its 35 Innovators Under 35 list. This year’s selection showcases nine individuals who are making significant strides in biotechnology, including advancements in maternal health, brain research, and genetic therapies. Here’s a glimpse into the pioneering work of five of these innovators.

Paschal Kija, at just 28 years old, has developed a crucial device known as the Mkanda Salama, which addresses postpartum hemorrhage—a severe complication responsible for nearly 29% of maternal deaths in Tanzania. Priced at a mere $70, this device has proven effective, stopping postpartum bleeding in 73% of cases within 20 minutes. Meanwhile, Xiao Yang, 34, is revolutionizing brain electrode technology. Her innovative approach involves creating ultra-small, flexible electrodes that minimize damage to surrounding brain tissue. Inspired by kirigami, a Japanese art form, Yang has designed a unique honeycomb structure that enables intricate studies of brain cells.

Another remarkable story is that of Sarah Grandinette, who played a pivotal role in developing a personalized gene-editing therapy for Kyle “KJ” Muldoon Jr., born in 2024 with a rare genetic disorder. Grandinette, now 26, engineered cells using KJ’s genetic information to test various treatments, ultimately leading to a successful therapy that allowed KJ to thrive after his first dose. Additionally, Yuancheng (Ryan) Lu, 34, is advancing longevity research through reprogramming therapies aimed at reversing age-related vision loss. His team’s recent efforts include a therapy currently being tested on patients with eye diseases, building on previous successes in animal models.

Lastly, Samuel King, 27, has harnessed generative AI to create new genetic blueprints for bacteriophages, tiny viruses capable of targeting bacteria. His AI-designed viruses have demonstrated the ability to replicate and infect, opening up potential applications in drug development and environmental cleanup. Together, these young innovators exemplify the transformative potential of biotechnology in addressing some of the world’s most pressing health challenges.
