In February, a unique convergence occurred in San Francisco, where animal welfare advocates met with artificial intelligence (AI) researchers at the coworking space Mox. The event, hosted by Sentient Futures, gathered a diverse crowd passionate about integrating AI into the animal welfare movement. Attendees engaged in discussions ranging from innovative rodent birth control methods to the implications of insect sentience for AI development. Amidst vibrant decor, including Persian rugs and mosaic lamps, the discussions revealed a shared belief that AI could play a pivotal role in addressing complex societal issues, including animal suffering.

The attendees, many of whom are deeply committed to animal welfare, view AI as a transformative force that could redefine how decisions regarding animal lives are made. Constance Li, founder of Sentient Futures, emphasized the importance of how AI values sentient beings, suggesting that the future of animal welfare may rely on AI systems that prioritize animal lives. This gathering also highlighted the growing connection between the animal welfare movement and effective altruism, a philosophy focused on maximizing positive global impact. Critics of effective altruism raise concerns about its utilitarian approach, particularly regarding its focus on future suffering over immediate issues, and the potential neglect of systemic societal problems.

As conversations unfolded, Jasmine Brazilek, cofounder of Compassion in Machine Learning, urged AI researchers to incorporate animal welfare considerations into their models. The promise of AI revitalized hopes in the animal welfare sector, especially as funding from tech industry employees is expected to surge. Lewis Bollard, managing director of the Farm Animal Welfare Fund, noted that much funding for animal welfare initiatives stems from individuals in the tech community, including influential figures like Facebook cofounder Dustin Moskovitz. This evolving partnership between AI and animal welfare advocates signals a new era of collaboration aimed at reducing animal suffering through innovative technology.
