Roman Chiporukha has transformed adventurous travel aspirations into tangible experiences over his 20-year career as co-owner of luxury lifestyle company Roman & Erica. His expertise ranges from overseeing the construction of bespoke superyachts to arranging exclusive vacations in the Bahamas, where privacy is paramount and guests must adhere to non-disclosure agreements. Through these unique offerings, Chiporukha has built a strong rapport with an elite clientele, which set the stage for an unexpected venture into space tourism.
In 2018, Axiom Space reached out to Chiporukha in search of three private citizens willing to invest $50 million each for a spot on the first fully private mission to the International Space Station (ISS), scheduled for April 2022. This pivotal moment made Chiporukha realize that the limitations of travel were no longer bound by earthly destinations; instead, a burgeoning market for space tourism was forming. Capitalizing on this opportunity, he established SpaceVIP in 2021, a platform designed to provide customers with extraordinary experiences that blend culture, science, and adventure among the stars.
To navigate the complex domain of commercial space travel, Chiporukha had to educate himself quickly about the intricacies involved. He has streamlined the fragmented space sector into a user-friendly digital portal, allowing aspiring space travelers to explore suborbital flights and other celestial adventures with ease. However, he emphasizes the need for expert guidance to secure personalized perks and upgrades. SpaceVIP caters to a select group of clients, crafting bespoke journeys that align with their aspirations and comfort levels. By collaborating with industry leaders such as Axiom, Blue Origin, SpaceX, and Virgin Galactic, Chiporukha creates tailored experiences ranging from zero-gravity parabolic flights to serene balloon rides 15 miles above the Earth’s surface, all designed for those who can afford such extraordinary endeavors.
Despite the challenges of making space travel accessible, Chiporukha is dedicated to igniting interest in this new frontier. He co-founded the Space Prize Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes STEM education through science competitions, particularly targeting young women and underrepresented groups. Winners receive opportunities for zero-gravity flights and immersive astronaut training, contributing to a broader mission of democratizing access to space. “Bringing down ticket prices is important,” Chiporukha remarks, “but fostering pathways into the industry and making the dream of space travel relatable and attainable is essential for a diverse future in this field.”
