NASA’s Roman Telescope: A Dual Mission for Science and Safety

NASA is preparing to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at the end of August. This ambitious mission aims to deepen our understanding of the universe, particularly focusing on dark matter and dark energy, which play crucial roles in the structure and expansion of the cosmos. However, the telescope is also poised to play a vital role in planetary defense by identifying and tracking potentially hazardous asteroids. A collaborative team of scientists will present the telescope’s capabilities for this purpose at the Europlanet Science Congress in The Hague this September.

The Roman Space Telescope is equipped with an advanced super-wide-angle infrared camera that enables it to survey vast areas of the sky—approximately three times the area observable by the Hubble Space Telescope. This capability will allow Roman to discover thousands of new exoplanets, tens of thousands of supernovae, and provide detailed surveys of over a billion galaxies. Its unique placement within our solar system enhances its potential for detecting asteroids, offering a new line of defense against celestial threats. The telescope can identify small asteroids, such as those about 20 meters in size, which is comparable to the Chelyabinsk event in 2013, where an asteroid exploded with the energy of roughly 470 kilotons of TNT.

While the Roman Space Telescope was not originally designed for asteroid detection, its extensive field of view and infrared observations will complement other telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). While JWST excels at focused observations of distant celestial bodies, Roman’s broader reach will allow it to quickly survey multiple asteroids, identifying potential threats. Should Roman detect an asteroid that raises concern, additional telescopes, including JWST, can conduct follow-up observations. This collaborative approach is essential for assessing the risk of impact and developing strategies for asteroid deflection if necessary. NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office is particularly focused on locating near-Earth asteroids that are 140 meters or larger. With an estimated 25,000 of these asteroids in existence, continuous monitoring is crucial for planetary safety. The launch of the Near-Earth Object Surveyor telescope in the near future will further enhance detection capabilities, ensuring that both Roman and other observatories work in unison to safeguard Earth from potential asteroid threats.
