WaveSave’s Innovative Rubber Dam Tackles Flood Risks

In response to escalating flood risks and rising sea levels attributed to climate change, WaveSave has introduced an innovative solution with its portable rubber dam, known as SlamDam. This easy-to-install flood barrier serves as a quick-response mechanism for individuals and communities to protect their properties from inundation. The SlamDam not only acts as a protective measure during floods but can also store freshwater for future use, showcasing its dual utility. The product has been effectively deployed in various regions, including Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia, where it has proven invaluable in enhancing community resilience against flooding.

Currently, one in five people worldwide faces a significant risk of flooding, particularly in areas lacking adequate protection. Many individuals in these vulnerable communities cannot afford to evacuate or relocate permanently during flood events. The SlamDam offers a practical solution, as it can be rapidly deployed by anyone along riverbanks or shorelines. By filling the dam with water, it expands to a height of up to 1.3 meters, providing a crucial barrier against rising waters and safeguarding nearby structures. Developed in the Netherlands in 2013, the SlamDam has since been utilized by regional water authorities and is now available in over a dozen countries, including recent demonstrations in urban environments like New York City.

With projections indicating that nearly 2 billion people could be exposed to floods by 2100, WaveSave’s portable dam represents a cost-effective alternative to traditional flood protection methods like levees. Its temporary nature allows for deployment when needed, and it can be stored away afterward, making it a flexible option for communities facing changing climate conditions. Additionally, the SlamDam’s design enables it to serve as a freshwater reservoir, providing irrigation opportunities for farmers during dry spells. Despite some challenges in community adoption and upfront costs, WaveSave is exploring innovative business models, such as offering SlamDam as a service, to enhance accessibility for at-risk communities. Looking ahead, the company plans to establish local production facilities in Southeast Asia and East Africa, aiming to reduce costs and expand its reach as it continues to innovate in the field of flood protection.
